how "just Google it" led to Lisa's 15-year career

When looking for an answer to something, are you guilty of "just Googling it?" Who isn't!? When the United States Air Force relocated Lisa Jasin to Dayton, she hopped on her computer and typed "NICU children's hospital" into the search bar. Funny part is, working in a delivery hospital previously, she has no idea why she Googled what she did. Regardless, of course, the right answer popped up...Dayton Children's Hospital! She joined the team in 2006 as a neonatal nurse practitioner.

"I will never forget as I walked through the halls with the recruiter, almost every person we passed said hello and then asked if I was new," recalled Lisa. "It felt like a great big family! The NICU was amazing, and I loved how personal it was."

This family-like atmosphere continued to shine for Lisa. When her son's cut got infected during a camping trip, he was lucky that his scoutmaster happened to also be a pediatric surgeon at Dayton Children's. With two children at home, one admitted at Dayton Children's and her husband deployed overseas, Lisa recalled being distraught and exhausted. Her husband got ahold of their son's nurse who gave an extensive update - including that they switched his bed after hearing him say it was uncomfortable!

"I will never forget her kindness to my family when she hardly knew me," said Lisa. "Everyone just did what they did because that is what we do here."

Specializing in neonatal abstinence syndrome, evidence-based practices and quality improvements, Lisa gives the same level of care to other families. She said that seeing a stressed family able to relax enough to smile or get some sleep is an instant day maker.

"I love what I do. I wake up in the morning happy to go to work with these babies and families, as well as our staff," said Lisa."I work with a great group of people, and there is no shortage of mentors here. I am motivated by and grateful for leaders that not only give me room to grow as a professional but encourage me to take part in activities that help me grow."

During her fifteen years at Dayton Children's, Lisa hasn't only grown, but she's soared.

Spearheading several NICU initiatives, protocols and projects, Lisa has partnered with neonatologists and pediatric surgeons to establish a quality improvement on minimizing variance in neonatal gastrostomy post-operative feeding. She also began Wright State University's neonatal nurse practitioner program. As the current clinical director of Brigid's Path, she was instrumental in establishing the Ohio organization as a crisis care facility for families impacted by neonatal abstinence syndrome. In 2021, she was named Dayton Children's Advanced Practice Provider (APP) of the Year. She's also received our Cameo of Caring Award, a Wright State University Graduate Excellence Award, was a March of Dimes Advanced Practice Nurse of the Year finalist and an Ohio Hospital Association Health Care Worker of the Year finalist.

"I often laugh to myself about why I searched for "NICU children's hospital" and never a delivery hospital," joked Lisa. "I have no explanation other than this is where I am supposed to be. I don't think I am going anywhere anytime soon."

Congratulations on 15 years, Lisa!
