learn more about our comprehensive pediatric anesthesiology services

When a child is undergoing surgery, the expertise of a pediatric anesthesiologist is critical. This is because a child’s anatomy and physiology are very different from an adult’s. Our pediatric anesthesiologists specialize in techniques that minimize pain during and after surgery, using equipment that is specifically designed for children.

If your child is undergoing surgery, the anesthesiologist will talk to you about what type of pain relief strategies are best for your child’s needs. Dayton Children’s is pleased to offer regional nerve blocks as an option for some surgeries. This type of anesthesia blocks pain sensations to specific areas of the body. It reduces the body's stress response to surgery, can allow a lighter level of general anesthesia during surgery and can reduce or eliminate the need for narcotic medication. If your child is receiving a regional nerve block, our acute pain team will provide it. This team includes pediatric anesthesiologists and an advanced practice nurse. Learn more

In addition to providing anesthesia for surgery, our pediatric anesthesiologists also are available to help if your child is unable to remain calm and still for a medical test or non-invasive surgical procedure. A member of the team will talk to you about different options, including a local anesthetic, sedation or general anesthesia. Learn more
