Bone cancers, like Ewing sarcoma and osteosarcoma, require a highly specialized, collaborative team for care. Our oncology and orthopedic specialists partner with regional experts to provide patients and families the expert care they need close to home in the Dayton region.

referring and first evaluation

If your child is suspected of having a musculoskeletal (muscle/bone) tumor, they can be referred to Dayton Children’s pediatric oncology or orthopedics. Your child will then be scheduled for an appointment with both clinics. We aim for your child to be seen by both teams on a priority basis, preferably on the same day. This collaborative team will perform the initial evaluation to determine a diagnosis. Once a diagnosis is confirmed, specific treatment will begin.

cancer treatment based on Children's Oncology Group standards

Dayton Children’s is a member of Children’s Oncology Group (COG), the premier cooperative research group in the US that specializes in taking care of children with cancer, including bone tumors. The treatment we provide at Dayton Children’s is based on the COG’s state-of-the-art treatment standards. Patients can also participate in clinical trials sponsored by COG, if desired. Patients with relapsed and resistant tumors will also have access to experimental phase I and phase II therapies through Dayton Children’s and our regional partners.

surgical treatment

Surgery is often part of your child’s treatment plan. If that is the case, we will refer you to one of our regional orthopedic oncology surgical partners for surgery. After surgery, your child can return to Dayton Children’s for their post-surgery care and treatment, including chemotherapy if required.
