tips on safe toys and gifts for kids this holiday season

We’re making a list and checking it twice!

We hope everyone can enjoy the holiday season with activities, games and toys that are safe and age appropriate for every member of the family. Dayton Children's and Safe Kids Worldwide have some great tips to keep the whole family safe, so check them out before you buy your presents!

tips for new toys and games

  • Consider your child's age when purchasing a toy or game. Read the instructions and warning labels to make sure the toy is just right for your child.
  • Check to make sure there aren't any small parts or other potential choking hazards before you settle on the perfect toy.
  • Make sure to check if your toy has button batteries or magnets. There are a lot of dangers with both of these, especially related to ingestions. Learn more about the dangers here.
  • Separate toys by age and keep a special eye on small game pieces that may be a choking hazard for young children. Toys intended for older children may pose a risk to younger, curious siblings.
  • Don't forget helmets for any riding equipment like a new fun bike, skateboard, scooter and more.
  • Check the Consumer Product Safety Commission for toy recalls.

what about used toys?

Before the holidays arrive is a great time to go through toys and games in your house to check for wear and tear. If the paint is peeling, the pieces are broken or missing, or the batteries are old and building up acid corrosion, its time to throw those toys away.

Used toys are also super affordable way to entertain children. Whether you receive second-hand items from friends and family, the thrift store or online marketplace, always check for any damage and wash the used toys before giving them to your children.

beware of counterfeit toys

Be on alert for toys and other children's products from pop-up ads, social media, or third-party vendors on online retailer sites. These toys can be counterfeit and counterfeit products aren't tested to meet U.S. safety standards.
