Half Price Books donates over 2,000 books to Dayton Children's

Dayton community donates books to replenish Half Pint libraries

Half Price Books will present more than 2,000 children's books during a dedication ceremony at 10:00 am on Thursday, May 14, at the Children's Health Clinic located on the campus of Dayton Children's at 730 C. Valley Street in Dayton.

On hand for the presentation will be Maria Nanagas, MD, medical director of the Children's Health Clinic and Nancy Woeste, district manager of Half Price Books. BW Bookworm, the Half Price Books mascot, will entertain patients and families.

"More than 100,000 books were collected for the program nationally this year and we're pleased to be able to present thousands of books to Dayton Children's on behalf of our community," said Kathy Doyle Thomas, executive vice president of Half Price Books.

The Half Pint Libraries in the hospital provide an escape from the challenges faced by pediatric patients, while helping to boost literacy skills. The books are placed in bright red carts donated by Half Price Books, so that they can be brought to children who may have limited mobility.

"We are very grateful for Half Price Books' generosity. The children and families look forward to receiving new books every year," says Maria Nanagas, medical director of the Children's Health Clinic.

In many cases, children and their siblings are getting their first take-home book through the Half Pint Library program. Books are also used for speech therapy and as a distraction method by hospital staff during testing or other procedures.

The Half Pint Library book drive took place for six weeks. Patrons were encouraged to drop off new or gently-used children's books at the Half Price Books location in the Dayton area. The store staff then sorted and prepared them for delivery to the hospital.
