deals to pass on this Prime Day, no matter how good the deal

Amazon, Target and other major retailers have some great deals going on this week and it can be exciting to get a bargain! There are some things you should pass on though when making purchases for your children, especially when it comes to safety! Below are some items we suggest you avoid purchasing, no matter how good the deal.

Infants

  • sleep positioners: The Consumer Product Safety Commission released new requirements and sleep positioners are no longer recommended for use
  • baby walkers: Opt for a stationary seat that your child can spin around in instead.
  • teething necklaces/beaded pacifier holders: beaded items including amber teething necklaces and silicone teethers and pacifier holders pose a choking hazard. Choose a solid, one-piece teether instead.
  • home cardiorespiratory monitors: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says that research has shown these monitors do not reduce the risk of SIDS. They are not recommended for home use.
  • weighted sleepers and blankets: The AAP released new safe sleep guidelines and they do not recommend the use of weighted swaddles, sleepers or blankets.

Young children

  • non-certified floatation devices: all floatation devices need to be certified by the U.S. Coast Guard. items like water wings and pool noodles should not be used in place of certified floatation devices.
  • car seat "extras": Items like mirrors, hard toys and window shades can all become projectiles in the event of a car crash, avoid using items like this with children in car seats.
  • rare earth magnets: These magnets can cause serious injuries or even death if swallowed, avoid giving them to children of any age.

Beyond these items, there has also been a rise in counterfeit children's items like helmets and car seats for sale online. Be sure to check that you are buying from a reputable source and remember if the deal seems oo good to be true, it probably is!
