Outgoing, resilient, hard-working and everyone’s biggest fan. That’s how Nicole describes her son Tyler. Tyler is a happy, healthy sixth grader now living in Tucson, Arizona. You’d never guess the challenges he’s had to overcome.

the road to recovery

At 18 months old, Tyler was diagnosed with a malignant tumor on his liver caused by a rare genetic mutation that happens in fewer than 1 in 1 million kids. Tyler’s doctors, Mukund Dole, MD and Arturo Aranda, MD, developed a plan for chemotherapy and surgery. Tyler first underwent two rounds of chemotherapy to shrink the tumor to a size that could be removed, followed by a 10-hour surgery in which 71% of his liver was removed. He then had two more rounds of chemotherapy to ensure any other cancer cells were killed. After six months of checkups and overnight stays at the hospital, Tyler’s tests came back with no evidence of disease. Now at 12 years old and 10 years cancer-free, Tyler isn’t just surviving, he’s thriving.

Tyler’s mom, Nicole, reflects on their experience and shares guidance for other families in this situation,

“Take it one day, one hour at a time,” she shares. “Try to enjoy the little moments, even during the hard times. Take pictures. You’ll want to remember how far your child has come.”

reminders of cancer

Although Tyler doesn't remember his time with cancer, he is still inspired to give back. Tyler has a large scar and a hearing aid, both of which serve as reminders of his cancer journey. These two things often spark conversations with friends, giving Tyler the opportunity to share his story and raise awareness. Beyond sharing with friends, Tyler has shared his story even more broadly! He has participated in events for pediatric cancer charities and serves as an ambassador for the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

Medically, Tyler’s liver has completely regenerated. He has graduated to annual oncology checkups and continues to see audiology specialists for hearing loss caused by chemotherapy. But he has no restrictions – Tyler is cleared to play sports and live life to the fullest.

Tyler is full of energy, loves school and is passionate about sports – playing baseball and both tackle and flag football. Tyler’s resilience shines on and off the field. “One thing that I love about Tyler is how much he loves to cheer people on,” says Nicole. Whether he’s cheering for his teammates or participating in events for the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation, he brings joy and strength to everything he does.”
