running clinic at Dayton Children's

The running clinic at Dayton Children’s Hospital offers a 2D running gait analysis, which utilizes software to capture your running form from a sagittal view (from the side) and a frontal view (from behind). The software captures different angles of joints throughout various points of the running gait cycle. With this software, the physical therapist can analyze biomechanics, and with the addition of a musculoskeletal evaluation, make recommendations to improve running gait.

who can benefit from a running gait analysis at Dayton Children’s?
Any recreational or advanced runner (ages 13-22) looking to improve performance, identify potential injury risk, or a runner who has experienced repetitive running-related injuries would benefit from a 2D running gait analysis.

what happens during a running gait analysis?
Before your running gait analysis, the physical therapist you are scheduled with will reach out via phone call to ask multiple questions regarding your current running regimen, prior history of injuries and goals of having a running gait analysis performed.

The running gait analysis comprises of a 90-minute session with one of our physical therapists including a musculoskeletal evaluation and running gait assessment on a treadmill. The musculoskeletal evaluation consists of strength, range of motion, flexibility, and a functional movement assessment. The running gait assessment includes at least 10 minutes of running at a self-selected pace.

After the evaluation, the physical therapist will review findings from the biomechanical and running gait assessment to develop an individualized treatment plan with therapeutic exercises, flexibility, gait retraining, and shoe wear/orthotic recommendations, if necessary. After the initial evaluation, the physical therapist will process and review results during a 45-minute follow-up appointment. At this session, the physical therapist will review the initial running gait assessment and progress any home exercise programs.

what should I wear for the evaluation?
Please wear athletic shorts and tank top or t-shirt for your evaluation that are contrasting colors. Wear shoes that you feel comfortable running in for 10+ minutes.

What is the cost for this evaluation?
A 90-minute session with a 45-minute follow-up appointment to review data is $150
