inpatient care

Sometimes, children need to be admitted to the hospital for serious problems caused by asthma, cystic fibrosis, pneumonia or another breathing-related condition. Depending on their symptoms, they might be admitted to the hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), transitional care unit (TCU) or another inpatient unit.

We know that a hospital stay can be stressful for children with a breathing condition and their families. Our team places a high priority on communication to ensure that families know what to expect, understand the treatment plan and receive answers to all their questions. We do all we can to make patients and their families feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible.

After patients return home, our team continues to provide support and care. The pulmonary department’s triage nurses are available by phone at 937-641-3376 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday to talk to parents when their child is ill, answer questions, process pharmacy refills, discuss insurance coverage, explain test results and much more. After hours, parents can dial 937-641-3000 to reach the hospital’s operator and ask for the pulmonary specialist on call.

complex care in the transitional care unit

For technology dependent patients who need to stay in our TCU and are also patients of the pulmonary clinic, we provide a coordinated approach to care in order to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Dr. Stephen Wolf is the medical director of the TCU and also a pulmonologist. This is beneficial to the patient because he has the knowledge and skill to treat these patients and is also in constant communication with the pulmonary clinic physicians to ensure continuity of care. Along with Dr. Wolf we have a dedicated nurse practitioner (NP), Sherry Kahn, NP, who splits her time between the TCU and the pulmonary clinic. Many of our patient families will get to know both Dr. Wolf and our NP making their inpatient stay more comfortable as they already have a relationship with the care team.
