EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT AND URGENT CARE CENTER FAXES: At the present time,
the emergency department and the on-site urgent care center are faxing
nearly 200,000 sheets of paper a year to primary care physicians. This
includes a number of specific documents including the emergency department
face sheet, the discharge sheet, the H&P used in the urgent care center
and a HIPAA cover sheet. We have heard concerns raised by a number of
physicians that these documents are not always helpful and the volume of
paperwork is excessive.
Over the past several weeks, we have reviewed the actual documents, as
well as some regulatory requirements (JCAHO and legal). We have concluded
we do not have to fax a copy of the medication list to the next provider
from the emergency department, as long as we give a copy to the patient to
take with them (JCAHO confirms). Secondly, we have concluded the HIPAA
disclaimer does not need its own sheet.
Where are we going with this? Our goal is to reduce the total number
of pages being sent to you, while trying to be certain important
information is available, especially for those patients being seen in
follow-up within one to three days after the emergency department visit.

CYSTIC FIBROSIS MUTATION SCREENING PANEL AVAILABLE: The molecular genetics
laboratory at Dayton Children’s has begun cystic fibrosis testing for the
original ACMG/ACOG panel of 25 mutations plus six variants. Our assay
consists of multiplex PCR to amplify all of the panel mutations in a
single reaction followed by directed primer extension (DPE) and automated
detection by micro array hybridization on the AutoGenomics INFINITI
instrument. Please use the following Sunquest test codes to order these
test:
CFMSP for the panel only
CFMSPR for the panel with reflexing to sequencing
CFSEQ for sequencing only
For this assay, we require 3-5 mL (1 mL minimum) whole blood in an
EDTA (purple-top) tube. Specimens will be batched and the assay performed
at least once a week. Results will be reported within 10 days of receipt
of specimen. If you have any questions, please contact the genetics
