Specimen:CSF in sterile tube
Vesicles in culturette, specify site
Volume:1.0 mL CSF

Swab of vesicle (no swabs with wooden shafts please) or vesicle fluid in Viral/Chlamydia transport media. Please specify site.
Container:Sterile container

Swab in Viral/Chlamydia transport media
Temperature:Room temperature. Refrigerate if transport is delayed more than one hour.
Rejection:Inappropriately identified or commingled specimens are unacceptable.

Diluted samples are unacceptable.

QNS specimens will be rejected.
Normal:Negative for VZV by PCR.
Uses:Detection of VZV by PCR. This test performed on CSF or swabs of wounds/vesicles.
Limitations:A negative result does not necessarily rule out infection.
