Turnaround:Preliminary report at 1 day. Negative cultures are finalized at 2 days, positives as identified.
Specimen:Catheterized urine
Container:Sterile container
Temperature:Room temperature, transport within 30 minutes. Refrigerate if delay in transport.
Rejection:Submitted in a non-sterile container.
Frozen specimen
Normal:No growth at 2 days.
Uses:Isolate and identify microorganisms causing urinary tract infections.
Limitations:Antibiotic therapy may inhibit growth. Bacteria in numbers less than 1000 colonies / mL. are not detected.
