Turnaround:same day result if received before 12 noon.
Specimen:Preferred: NP swab collected from the posterior NP.
Alternate: Nasal wash or respiratory suction/sample
Volume:Preferred: 1 NP swab
Alternate: 1 ml of nasal wash or respiratory suction/sample
Container:Preferred: Swab in culturette or in M4 media.
Alternate: Sterile container for nasal wash or other respiratory suction/sample.
Temperature:Room temperature. Refrigerate if transport is delayed more than one hour.

Rejection:non-respiratory sample
Normal:Negative for B. pertussis/parapertussis by PCR
Uses:Detects the presence of Bordetella pertussis and/or parapertussis
Limitations:A negative result does not necessarily rule out infection of pertussis or parapertussis
