sports physicals made simple
Just like professional sports stars need medical care to keep them playing their best, so do young athletes. Sports physicals help keep them safe on the field, while regular physicals support their overall health and wellbeing. Together, these visits help your child stay healthy, confident and ready to play.
We always recommend calling your child’s primary care provider first to schedule their sports physical. They know your child best and keep a complete record of their health history.
If your child’s primary care provider isn’t available, Kids Express can help. Our pediatric nurse practitioners can perform sports and camp physicals and complete required forms the same day.
about sports physicals
There are two main parts to a sports physical: the physical exam and your child’s medical history.

It may seem like a lot, but sports physicals and regular yearly physicals are not the same, and kids need both. Your child’s yearly physical should be done with their primary care provider.
A sports physical looks at your child’s health as it relates to playing a sport. It focuses on things like heart health, past injuries and how the body handles physical activity. A regular yearly physical, done with your child’s primary care provider, looks at the big picture.
During this visit, your child’s provider checks your child’s social, emotional, academic and physical growth and development. Sports are just one small part of your child’s overall health, which is why yearly physicals are so important.
Even if a sports physical goes well, it’s still important to watch how your child feels during practices and games. If you notice changes in their physical condition, like ongoing pain, shortness of breath or fatigue, talk with your child’s coach or schedule a visit with their doctor. You should also let coaches, gym teachers or trainers know if your child’s health needs have changed in any way or if they are taking a new medicine.
During the exam, we’ll ask questions about your child’s health history. This helps us make sure it’s safe for them to play sports or attend camp. These questions may include:
- Serious health conditions in your family
- Health conditions your child has now or had in the past, such as asthma, diabetes or epilepsy
- Past hospital stays or surgeries
- Allergies, including reactions to foods, medicines or insect bites
- Past injuries like including concussions, sprains or broken bones
- Any times your child has passed out, felt dizzy, had chest pain, or had trouble breathing during exercise
- Medicines your child takes including over-the-counter medicines, herbal supplements and prescriptions
You’ll answer these questions on a form that you’ll fill out with your child. Looking at family and personal health history helps providers identify patterns and better understand your child’s needs.
This part of the visit is very important, so take your time and answer as carefully as you can. The good news is that most health conditions do not prevent kids from playing sports. Our goal is to help your child stay safe, healthy and active.
