  • Nutrition counseling: A registered dietitian will complete a full dietary evaluation and help your family create a balanced meal plan that fits your child’s preferences and needs.
  • Exercise guidance: We’ll assess your child’s physical abilities and recommend fun, safe activities to support their goals.

Lifestyle coaching: Our team provides family-focused education, goal-setting, and resources to help healthy changes stick long-term.

news and blogs

Stay up-to-date with the latest insights from Dayton Children’s Hospital. We’re always working to share helpful, real-world content for families navigating care.

inspiring patient stories

It is stressful to be diagnosed with a new condition. Hearing from other families and having a trusted care team with you for the journey can make a big difference. Our patient stories highlight real experiences from parents and kids who’ve faced cardiology diagnoses. See how they navigated care and found answers, in part thanks to our compassionate care team.

what to expect for your first visit

At your child’s first visit, our team will take time to understand their daily habits, medical history, and overall wellness. We’ll review any lab work ordered before your appointment, complete a full physical exam, and begin setting goals together. Your child’s first visit may take up to 90 minutes and often includes time with the nurse, provider, and dietitian.

Follow-up visits may be scheduled every 1–6 months, either in person or virtually, depending on your child’s needs and progress.

possible testing

Testing helps our team learn more about your child’s unique health needs so we can design the most effective plan. Depending on your child’s situation, the following tests may be recommended:

  • Exercise testing: To evaluate activity tolerance and identify safe fitness goals.
  • Sleep studies: To check for sleep-related issues that may affect weight or energy.
  • Cardiac testing (echocardiogram and EKG): To assess heart health and function.
  • Blood work: To check cholesterol, blood sugar, and other key indicators.
  • Resting energy expenditure (REE): To measure calorie needs for growth and activity.
  • Oral glucose tolerance test: To measure how your child’s body uses sugar.

treatment plan details

Each child receives a family-centered treatment plan that includes goals across six key wellness areas: nutrition, physical activity, mindful habits, sleep, screen time, and stress management. Each child’s treatment plan is tailored to their specific health goals and medical needs and may include medical testing or medications when appropriate.

Our team partners closely with other specialists to address related conditions and ensure coordinated care. Progress and readiness to “graduate” from the program are reviewed at each visit.
