TWIGS presents Dayton Children’s with $257,000

auxiliary group presented gift at annual meeting

On Thursday, January 27, 2011, TWIGs (Terrific Women In Giving), the auxiliary of The Children's Medical Center of Dayton, hosted their annual meeting at the Presidential Banquet Center in Kettering.  Cindy Guthrie, 2010 Auxiliary President, presented a check to Charlie Foley, Chairman of Dayton Children’s Board of Trustees in the amount of $257,000. This donation completes the final phase of a $500,000 TWIGS pledge toward the renovation of Dayton Children’s Soin Pediatric Trauma and Emergency Center, the area’s only Level II Trauma Center dedicated to caring for children.

Cindy Guthrie announced the new 2011 TWIG Auxiliary pledge of $500,000 over three years to provide funding toward the Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Care Endowment.  This endowment was created to enhance an already family-focused cancer care program that would connect patients with multiple resources dealing with care, treatment, education, support groups, and so much more.  Annual interest generated by this endowment will eventually fund a social work position, a child life specialist specifically assigned to the cancer program and patient/family educational materials.

Several members of the community were also recognized during the evening as honorary TWIG members for their outstanding support of the organization. This year’s honorees are Andrew Denka and Accountemps, Michael Karaman and James Free Jewelers and Greg Burba.

Andrew Denka, CEO of Accountemps, was recognized for supporting the Gem City Jam Golf Outing for the past five years and supporting our communication publication The TWIG Leaf published by Denka’s assistant, TWIG member Monti Moyer.

Michael Karaman, President of James Free Jewelers, was nominated as an honorary TWIG due to his support over many years with donations of beautiful pieces of jewelry for Gem City Jam’s Raffle “Carats for Kids” and also for auction and raffle items donated to the annual Sugarplum Festival of Trees.

Greg Burba was present to accept the honorary membership because of his generosity in storing and caring for the Trailer that houses all of the trees and displays used annually for Sugarplum Festival of Trees.  Also affectionately known as “Trailer Man” by our TWIG family, Greg takes great responsibility in loading and unloading the trailer, coordinating the setting up and dismantling of displays, trees and racks for Sugarplum Festival of Trees every year.

The 2011 elected officers of the auxiliary are as follows: Stephanie Palmer of Centerville, president; Carol Inkrott of Beavercreek, president elect; Debbie Bowers of Beavercreek, secretary; and Jan Scheid of Dayton, treasurer.

Among some of the events planned for 2011 are the Gem City Jam Golf Outing and Hoopla on August 22 at NCR Country Club in Kettering and the annual Sugarplum Festival of Trees event November 18 through the 20 at the Presidential Banquet Center in Kettering.
