Dayton Children's honors distinguished service award winners

The Children's Medical Center of Dayton is pleased to announce that Emmett Broxson, MD, Maria Nanagas, MD, and Joseph Ross, MD, have been awarded the first ever Distinguished Service awards. Dr. Broxson, Dr. Nanagas and Dr. Ross were presented the award before their peers on Friday, March 12 at the Dayton Art Institute. 

The Distinguished Service Award recognizes professional staff members who have supported Dayton Children's and their community as a significant contributor, a role model and mentor, as a provider of high quality pediatric care in the community and someone who has made a significant contribution to the medical center's mission. 

Emmett Broxson, MD, Professor of Pediatrics in the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University and medical director of hematology/oncology at Dayton Children's, has spent over 40 years serving his country as well as the Miami Valley Region. After retiring from the US Air Force, he has invested the past 15 years of his life leading the hematology/oncology department. 

Dr. Broxson has held countless academic and administrative appointments and is actively involved with the pediatric residency program through Wright State University. He has been director of the Comprehensive Care Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Dayton Children's for over 15 years, in addition to director of several other oncological-related services. His research has furthered patient care for hundreds of children and has led to an incredibly high-quality accredited pediatric cancer center. 

Maria Nanagas, MD, has spent close to 35 years devoted to under served children. For 20 of those years, she has been the director of Dayton Children's health clinic where she has led quality improvements and precepted hundreds of residents in a complex medical setting. 

Dr. Nanagas has shown a commitment to advocacy and research to improve the lives of needy children. She has received numerous awards as one of the top women in Dayton. 

Joseph Ross, MD, has spent over 20 years as medical director of Dayton Children's cardiology department, a service that is consistently recognized for outstanding service to children, families and community providers. He has held numerous roles in physician leadership and provided years of service on quality improvement and patient care committees. 

Dr. Ross is a dedicated teacher, physician and leader who continues to share knowledge through the pediatric residency program at Wright State University as an Associate Clinical Professor and by actively participating in Dayton Children's Speakers Bureau.
