cooking with kids: homemade taco seasoning

Over the past few weeks, grocery store stocks have become sparse. This means, your staple food items might not be available. It’s time to find creative ways to continue to make our favorite meals!

Tacos are an easy meal that they whole family can enjoy. There are a variety of substitutions that can be made when standard items are not available in the grocery store. Homemade taco seasoning is easy to make, and most people have all the necessary ingredients already in their home.

Taco Seasoning

  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon oregano
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon pepper

The mixture makes enough for 1 lb of meat. The chili powder and pepper can be adjusted based on your taste preference.

Look through your freezer and see what kind of meats you have available. Taco meat can be made with ground beef, shredded pork, ground turkey, or chopped chicken or your favorite beans. Use the seasoning recipe and add it to the protein of your choice.

If your preferred tortilla shells aren’t available, you can use several other options. You can make nachos with tortilla chips, lettuce wraps with large lettuce leaves, or taco bowls with rice and other topping.

Think of what vegetables go well with taco meals.  Veggie like onions, pepper, tomatoes, corn, and avocado will add more color, flavor, texture and nutritional value to your meal.

Taco meats also makes great leftovers. Use the extra meat to make quesadillas, enchiladas, or taco casserole. Open your pantry, see what you have, and have fun making up something new!
