6/20/22 employee experience

Beth's 17 years (and counting!) of memories

Lots of times, we learn best from those around us. This is why, when choosing a job, it's important to find a culture that immerses you into a group of mentors (aka your go-to advice givers!) During her 17 years at Dayton Children's, Beth Linegang has learned a lot from her Dayton Children's family - everything from changing a tire and learning to clean in high heels to discovering her passion for patient care.

It all began during her initial days at Children's Home Care of Dayton, when Beth found herself stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire (what a welcome!) Then director of home care, Vickie Peoples, came to the rescue and taught Beth how to change a car tire - a skill she admits came in handy during her ten years with home care.

"This experience is one of many I've had at Dayton Children's where I have seen the collaboration of a caring workforce," said Beth Linegang, MSN, RN, clinical resource nurse.

"I have never worked somewhere, like here, where you often can't tell who is a manager or director since everyone pitches in all the time to help."

After returning to school for her masters in global public health nursing, Beth transferred to Dayton Children's infection prevention department. It was here that she made memories while working with multi-disciplinary teams to prepare for Ebola outbreaks and hospital associated infections, and safely transferring patients to the new tower.

It was June 5, 2017, the night before the patient tower opened. The clock struck midnight and Beth and a coworker were climbing patient room windowsills in high heels, dusting the last bits of construction dust. She said that standing with her coworker and watching the faces of patients as they were moved to their bright, new, beautiful space remains one of her all-time favorite memories.

In October 2019, Beth transferred to the hematology department as a nurse coordinator for patients with bleeding and clotting disorders.

"The thing I love most is assisting patients to obtain their optimal level of health while managing chronic or acute illness," said Beth. "We treat the whole patient and family, assisting them to meet basic needs which then allows them to be better stewards of their health."

Changing tires, cleaning late night and discovering our path - it's these moments, next to the people who we share a common mission with and have come to know and love, that make years feel like months and days feel like seconds. Congratulations on 18 years of above and beyond service, Beth!

"Some days are hard - we laugh, we cry, we play, we redirect," said Beth. "It can all be exhausting and exhilarating at the same time. Don’t let the bad times take away the great times. It may not feel like you are appreciated, but then one day 10 years after taking care of a patient, they will run up to you in the grocery store and say, "thank you." You may or not remember them, but they remember you. Give them the best care possible."
