6/1/22 employee experience

all roads led Cindy back home

There is something undoubtedly special about working at a children's hospital. It's a feeling that's difficult to capture in words - the radiating hope, welcoming atmosphere and captivating energy that overpowers us when we walk through the doors. Cindy Brown knows these contagious qualities - they've kept her clocking in at Dayton Children's for 33 years!

In junior high school, Cindy volunteered assisting Dayton Children's nursing staff as a "candy striper." However, like many college graduates stepping into the "real world," after receiving her advanced practice degree from the University of Cincinnati, Cindy was ready to plant her own roots away from home.

"I knew that if I stayed in Dayton, I would work at Dayton Children's Hospital," said Cindy.

You know what they say...all roads lead home (literally!) Cindy lived out of state for about ten years before returning to the Miami Valley and applying at Dayton Children's. As an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) with pain services, she helps patients manage acute and chronic pain.

"Pain can be so debilitating and delay healing and impair function," explained Cindy. "I love when our team comes together and has a plan to help our patients."

According to Cindy, she loves working with children because of the instant "day maker" that their laughter, enthusiasm and love brings. And based on her impressive award resume, it's clear that patients receive reciprocated feelings. At Dayton Children's she's won two nursing excellence awards and was designated as a Cameo of Caring, the highest honor of nursing awards, in 2001. During her health care tenure, she's received the Ohio Association of Advanced Practice Nurses Clinical Practice Award and the 2019 American Society of Pain Management Nursing's JoAnn Eland Award for Excellence in Pediatric Pain Management. She was also named a Dayton Business Journals Health Care Heroes Award finalist.

"I am more towards the end of my career than the beginning," explained Cindy. "It has been exciting to be in one place for a long time and observing change. I really have enjoyed the privilege of taking care of patients and families over the years. It has been so worthwhile.  And I appreciate having worked with some of the very best professionals that you could hope to know, learn to grow with and to share both success and failures with!"

Congratulations on 33 years, Cindy!
