28 years behind the boiler with Dan Faulkner

Here in Dayton, Ohio, we experience the brunt of a cold Midwest winter (brr!) The winter walk from the parking garage to the hospital goes a little bit something like this: bundle up, run and do not pass go! Our facilities team keeps up with these below zero temperatures, making sure hot water and air are available at the turn of a faucet or flick of a switch.

Meet the man inside the boiler room, Dan Faulkner, facilities tech III. As a licensed high pressure boiler operator and lead technician, Dan oversees the hospital's boiler and steam, water and pneumatic tube systems.

Dan's love for Dayton Children's began long before his facility days. Working as a vending machine serviceman, he was responsible for on-site customer repairs. Of course, it just so happened that Dayton Children's was one of these customers. While on a service call, Dan noticed a job board with a listing for building services.

"On these service calls, I always thought Dayton Children's would be a cool place to work," he shared. "I applied, and the rest is history."

That is...about 28 years of history! The most stand out moment? Our radiothons and telethons.  

"It's cool to see the community come together for the cause of the hospital," explained Dan. "I've also enjoyed the relationships I have made over the years and seeing what the hospital does for the kids of the Dayton area."

According to Dan, while a lot of change has happened since 1994, one thing has remained unbreakable - our mission. At the end of the day, it all comes down to our patients and families. For Dan, "knowing what Dayton Children's parents are going through" is a reminder to keep going above and beyond. His son, weighing just over one pound at birth, spent 11 weeks in a hospital. At one point, he was a patient at Dayton Children's. 

"It motivates me to be even a small part of making the patients and parents comfortable while they are here," said Dan.
