more about Dayton, Ohio and Dayton Children's Hospital

Dayton Children’s main campus, located in the heart of Dayton, Ohio, is a freestanding children’s hospital and the only children’s hospital serving the Greater Dayton area.  It is the tertiary care center for 20 counties in Ohio and eastern Indiana. This, combined with the large number of subspecialists, gives our fellows a great opportunity to see both large volume in standard pathology as well as many lesser seen diagnoses. Dayton Children’s is also an integral part in the care of the many immigrant and refugee children that have been welcomed into the Dayton community over the last two decades.  Shriners Hospital for Children - Ohio is located within Dayton Children’s Hospital’s main campus.  Our hospital has well-established and nationally recognized patient safety and quality improvement programs that will be foundational to your scholarly work as a fellow.  In 2017 we opened a new 8 story inpatient tower, followed shortly by an outpatient pavilion with primary care, a learning kitchen, foster care clinic, and many other services.  Our south campus houses the outpatient surgery center, specialty ambulatory services, urgent care, and emergency department.  We recently broke ground on a new ambulatory center on the main campus. Besides participating in a great program, we find living in Dayton offers us dynamic adventures while being very affordable. This midsized Midwestern city is family friendly and has affordable cost of living, inexpensive real estate, and minimal traffic. It boasts many wonderful public parks for hiking, bicycling, paddle sports and other outdoor activities that are all free of charge. Dayton is home to the High Single A Dayton Dragon’s who are a part of the Cincinnati Red’s Baseball system.  The Dayton Live (formerly Victoria Theater Association) hosts touring Broadway musicals, theater productions, and the Dayton Opera.  The Dayton Ballet and Dayton Contemporary Dance Company perform throughout the year.  The history of the Wright Brothers and the birthplace of aviation is showcased throughout the city.  From spring to fall, there is an interesting and unique festival every weekend.  Dayton is ideally situated between Cincinnati and Columbus, and is within reasonable driving distance to Indianapolis, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. The area is very supportive of the Air Force as Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is the largest single-site employer of civilians in the state of Ohio. In this Air Force city, there is the United States Air Force Museum and the annual Air Force Marathon, which is a Boston Marathon qualifying run. There are many restaurants, shops, museums and events that offer military discounts, creating more financial incentive to live in this already inexpensive city!
