The mission of Dayton Children's is to improve the health status of children. One way of doing this is through the care given by our nurses. Nursing care not only focuses on making a child better but by promoting safety, educating families and helping the overall well-being of the child and their family. Nurse Extern Program

The extern program was developed to give junior nursing students an opportunity to get hands-on experience with pediatric patients. The students accepted into our program all have an interest in being pediatric nurses when they graduate.

This is very important for nurses to get extra training and experience with pediatric patients, which is not standard in the nursing program. It demonstrates the importance of pediatric specialists.

Dayton Children's periodically accepts applications for our extern program. The externship is eight weeks long. About 54 percent of our externs end up staying on and working at Dayton Children's.
