One of the advantages of having two grown children is a sense of perspective it has given me in helping to raise my ten-year-old. One of the lessons I have learned from my first two youngsters was the importance of focusing on only a few things that really matter.
It is easy to put lots of pressure on kids. Keep your room clean. Get good grades. Make the right friendships. Do well outside of the classroom. When you make everything important, then nothing is important.
Lighten up a little a bit, and focus on the few things that really matter. Emphasize the importance of character traits such as honesty, trust, treating others well, and learning the value of hard work and diligence. Live the values you want your children to imitate.
