partnering to enhance urology services

Dayton Children's and Nationwide Children's expand their alliance

Further strengthening the relationship between Dayton Children’s Hospital and Nationwide Children’s Hospital, the hospitals are partnering to offer urology services under the Ohio Pediatric Care Alliance. While Nationwide Children’s urologists have already been active members of the Dayton Children’s department of urology, the hospitals have formalized the arrangement to seamlessly deliver quality urologic services, increase access, improve efficiencies and strengthen the coordination of care for children with urologic conditions.

“The power of this partnership benefits our children,” says Deborah A. Feldman, president and CEO of Dayton Children’s. “Having the expertise of the pediatric urologists in these two departments available only enhances the service that we provide our patients and families, and achieves the best outcomes for our children.”

In October 2013, Dayton Children’s and Nationwide Children’s formalized their long-standing partnership by forming the Ohio Pediatric Care Alliance. This joint venture was designed to provide a structure for the two organizations to work together to improve access to specialty care services and collaborate on important quality of care and patient safety initiatives. The venture did not represent a merger of the two hospitals, but rather a formal care alliance designed to allow the two independent children’s hospitals to share resources, avoid duplication and better utilize limited pediatric specialists. The Alliance provides a structure for working collaboratively on initiatives that further the shared mission of both hospitals—to provide high quality, cost-effective, accessible care to all children.

“Our long-standing collaborative relationship with our colleagues at Dayton Children’s provides a structure through which we are implementing cost-effective services and improved efficiencies that further our shared mission of providing the highest quality pediatric healthcare to the children and families we both serve,” said Nationwide Children’s senior vice president for strategic and facilities development Patty McClimon.

It was determined that Dayton Children’s excellent urology services provided to Dayton-area pediatric patients could be enhanced by sharing Nationwide Children’s internationally-renowned chief of urology V. Rama Jayanthi, MD, as well as the full resources of Nationwide Children’s urology services. Dr. Jayanthi built a highly successful department of urology at Nationwide Children’s and will extend those learnings and expertise as the new chief of urology of Dayton Children’s. Together, the two departments will provide seamless high-quality care, establish joint quality initiatives and deliver optimal outcomes to the children of the Dayton area.

“Our partnership with Nationwide Children’s Hospital is a long-standing one,” says Donald Nguyen, MD, Dayton Children’s urologist. “I am pleased we will now be able to share even more skills and resources, providing even better care for our kids.”

Dayton Children’s and Nationwide Children’s operate a joint outpatient specialty care center and collaborate on heart services quality initiatives in Springfield as well as a Lima clinic.
