Media Release: Dayton Children’s and The Diabetes Association Dayton Area announce a new summer camp (Camp Tiponi)
Camp just for children with insulin resistance, pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes
06-03-2009 (Dayton, OH) -
Camp Tiponi is a new camp for children with insulin resistance, pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes held in partnership between the The Children's Medical Center of Dayton and The Diabetes Association Dayton Area.
"The word 'Tiponi' is Native American for 'child of importance' and every child is important to us at Camp Tiponi," says Christi Bernard, RN, lipid resource nurse at Dayton Children's.
"We developed this camp to allow youth who have insulin resistance, pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes to participate in a specially designed program where they can feel comfortable while enjoying a fun camping experience."
"Insulin resistance" is a condition that commonly affects children and teens with an elevated BMI (Body Mass Index). Families of prospective campers who are unsure of their risk for insulin resistance are encouraged to contact their primary care physicians.
During camp, children will develop the knowledge and skills needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle through a balance of proper nutrition and exercise. Campers will stay in a relaxed outdoor atmosphere, making new friends and sharing with them all the activities of a camp environment. They'll learn that others live in a situation similar to theirs and that having insulin-resistance or pre-diabetes need not be unnecessarily restrictive. They'll grow both socially and emotionally with others of their own age.
This special summer camp will be held at YMCA's Willson Outdoor Center in Bellefontaine, Ohio and is geared for kids and teens ages 8 through 16. The overnight camp will be held Sunday, July 26 through Wednesday, July 29. The cost of camp is $35.00.
