08-25-2014 (Dayton, OH) -

Dayton Children’s Hospital welcomes Kelly Sandberg, MD, MSc, to the gastroenterology department.  With the addition of Dr. Sandberg, Dayton Children’s now has six pediatric gastroenterologists.  That means faster, quality care close to home.  Children can now see a specialist at Dayton Children’s in as little as two days for their digestive system disorders.

Dr. Sandberg just completed a pediatric health services research fellowship in child health evaluation and research at the University of Michigan.  While there, he also completed a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and earned a master’s of science degree in health and health care research.  Dr. Sandberg earned his medical degree at the University of Arizona and completed his pediatric residency at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus.

Dr. Sandberg has special interest in the care of patients with inflammatory bowel disease – making sure the best processes are in place for patient care. He also speaks Russian and has a commitment to caring for the underserved.  While in medical school in Arizona, he served as a caregiver to foreign-born victims of torture seeking asylum. He also taught elementary school children about health and science topics in both Tucson, Arizona and Columbus, Ohio.  He joins Dayton Children’s as a Wright State physician.

Dayton Children’s GI specialists evaluate, diagnose and treat diseases involving the esophagus, stomach, intestines, pancreas and liver.  They also provide comprehensive nutrition assessments and recommendations.  The team sees more than 8,000 patients a year at the hospital as well as three specialty clinics in Springfield, Lima and Middletown.
