Renovations are underway to expand services

09-11-2009 (Dayton, OH) - Dayton Children's, along with special guest The Honorable Ted Strickland, Governor of Ohio, announced the new name of the Regional Pediatric Trauma and Emergency Center on Thursday, September 10.

Dayton Children's received a transformational gift from the Raj and Indu Soin Family Foundation which will support the much-needed renovation of the region's only trauma and emergency center dedicated to children. Dayton Children's trauma and emergency department will now be called Soin Pediatric Trauma and Emergency Center.

"Dayton Children's is honored that the Soin family has chosen such a vital project to further their foundation's mission of supporting health care, education and community needs, says David Kinsaul, president and CEO. "This gift demonstrates the Soins' trust and value in Dayton Children's and our mission of caring for all children and teenagers regardless of their ability to pay."

In the past year, Dayton Children's has treated over 59,000 patients in the emergency department with everything from an earache to life-threatening injuries. The increasing needs of the community have resulted in growing emergency volumes.

Much-needed renovations are currently underway to expand the trauma and emergency center to meet the increase in demand. The new space will improve patient care, reduce wait times and create a better experience overall for patients and families.

Cindy Burger, director of critical care services at Dayton Children's states, "The design of the facility is a critical element in bringing about change in the way health care is provided and experienced by our patients, families and staff."

The current center is 14,500 square feet, was built in the 1980s and last renovated in the 1990s. Plans include doubling the size of the center, designing a family-friendly waiting room with amenities and distraction therapy, adding trauma suites and establishing a fast-track triage area for noncritical patients. Renovations are scheduled to be finished by spring 2011.

"We are honored to provide funding for Dayton Children's expanded emergency department services, says Raj Soin. "Families in the Miami Valley will certainly benefit from this expansion."

The total cost of the renovation project is $8.5 million with $5.3 million come from community support.

"The Soin family's generous commitment to help fund this project is a great example of how the Dayton community has stepped up to ensure children receive the best possible care," said Duke Haddad, vice president for development at Dayton Children's.

Total emergency department visits in the past three years (fiscal year is July 1 to June 30):

  • 2006-07 - 53,812
  • 2007-08 - 57,622
  • 2008-09 - 59,304
