06-26-2014 (Dayton, OH) -

Singing to a 5-week-old baby may not be all that unusual, but it made all the difference for one family at Dayton Children’s Hospital.  That’s just one reason why Branden Kombrinck, RN is this quarter’s DAISY award winner.

The DAISY Award is given at hospitals around the country to recognize nurses for their extraordinary acts of compassion and excellence in their works with patients, families, the community and their co-workers.

"My 5-week-old son was admitted for RSV and Rhino virus. During our stay in the PICU, Branden was our nurse. I have never had such a wonderful experience!” the family wrote in their nomination.

“Branden continuously explained every detail of my son’s condition completely and in a way I would understand. He was extremely kind to all of my guests and very professional. He came in on several occasions and sang to my son, even though he was sedated.  We definitely felt as if he cared about our entire family. The entire PICU staff was extremely helpful and overall terrific."

Branden of Kettering has worked in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Dayton Children’s for two and a half years.  He says he always sings to the babies, especially those who are sedated.   “It seems to help them stay calm,” he explains.  Branden also says he learned how to give such comforting care to his patients and families by watching his co-workers.
