Available:Lab open M-F 7:30a-4:00p. Specimens accepted daily, 24 hrs. Specimens batched and run M-W-F and as needed.

Specimen:Blood

Container:Sodium heparin green top
Temperature:Give specimen to send-out tech (1st shift) or core lab tech (2nd/3rd shift, weekends, holidays). Spin, remove and freeze plasma at -20 degrees C. Specimen should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
Rejection:Specimens should be as fresh as possible.
Normal:0 - 1 month 0.6 - 2.2 mg%; 1 month - 2 months 0.5 - 1.2 mg%; 2 months - 18 years 0.4 - 1.5 mg%; 18 years + 0.6 - 1.4 mg%
Uses:To monitor phenylalanine levels in patients with PKU.
Limitations:Protein intake may affect phenylalanine levels.
