Includes:Viral isolation and identification from nasal wash.
Phone:(937) 641-3907
Available:Daily 24 hours, Specimens received before 1 PM set up same day
Turnaround:Negatives reported at 14 days, positives as identified
Specimen:Nasal wash
Volume:1-2 mL of nasal wash in Viral/Chlamydia transport media.
Container:Viral/Chlamydia transport media.
Temperature:Transport on ice. Refrigerate if transport is delayed more than 1 hour.
Rejection:Specimen not submitted in Viral/Chlamydia transport media
Normal:No virus isolated
Uses:Detects and identifies viral infection in nasal washings.

Detectable Viruses Adenovirus, CMV, Enterovirus, HSV, Influenza A/B, Parainfluenza 1/2/3/4, RSV, VZV.

Please notify the Virology Lab if looking for Measles, Mumps, or Rhinovirus.
Limitations:For better turnaround time and broader spectrum of viruses identified, a RIDPP/Respiratory Viral Panel for PCR should be ordered instead of the NWVC. If CMV or VZV is suspected PCR for the suspected virus should be ordered on the specimen.

Proper specimen collection and transport are critical in the detection of etiological agents. A negative result does not rule out a viral infection.
