Turnaround:Negatives reported at 14 days, positives as identified
Specimen:Vesicle swab
Volume:Sterile swab (no swabs with wooden shafts please) or any fluid placed in Viral/Chlamydia transport media
Container:Viral/Chlamydia transport media
Temperature:Transport on ice. Refrigerate if transport is delayed more than 1 hour.
Rejection:Specimen not submitted in viral/chlamydia transport media.
Normal:No virus isolated.
Uses:Detects and identifies viral infection in vesicles.

Detectable Viruses - Adenovirus, CMV, Enterovirus, HSV, VZV
Limitations:Proper specimen collection and transport are critical in the detection of etiological agents. A negative result does not rule out a viral infection.

If Adenovirus, CMV, HSV or VZV is the only virus suspected, PCR is a more sensitive and specific test and has a turnaround time of 1 day.
