Specimen:Cerebrospinal fluid
Volume:0.1 mL spinal fluid
Container:Sterile spinal fluid collection tube
Temperature:Must be delivered to lab within 30 minutes after collection.
Rejection:In transport longer than 30 minutes, bloody tap.
Normal:40-80 mg/dL (should be 60-70% of plasma glucose). CSF glucose should be run with simultaneous blood glucose.
Uses:Differential diagnosis of meningitis and neurological disorders.
Limitations:Falsely decreased results may be due to cellular or bacterial utilization if the test is not performed immediately. Visibly hemolyzed samples may give decreased results.
