Temperature:Must be delivered to lab within 30 minutes after collection.
Rejection:In transport longer than 30 minutes, bloody tap
Normal:15-45 mg/dL
Uses:Useful in diagnosis of meningitis, tuberculous meningitis, brain abscess, meningovascular syphillis, CVA, neoplastic diseases, multiple sclerosis and other degenerative processes causing neurologic disease.
Limitations:Fresh blood or hemolysis will cause a false increase in CSF protein. Tubes containing sodium citrate should not be used.
Method:Colorimetric (pyrogallol red)
