Turnaround:Preliminary report at 1 day. No growth cultures are finalized at 3 days, positives as identified.
Specimen:Surgically collected tissue or biopsy material is suitable for culture. A small amount of sterile physiologic non-bacteriostatic saline may be added to specimen container to prevent dehydration.

Container:Culturette or sterile container
Temperature:Room temperature, transport to lab within 10 minutes.
Rejection:N/A
Normal:No growth or normal flora
Uses:Identifying microorganisms that may cause infection.
Limitations:Antibiotic therapy may inhibit growth. Culture is more sensitive than gram stain. Contamination with adjacent areas should be avoided.
