Turnaround:Preliminary report at 1 week. Negative cultures are finalized at 6 weeks, positives as identified.
Specimen:Bone marrow aspirate
Volume:0.5 mL
Container:Heparinized syringe or yellow stopper isolator tube
Temperature:Room temperature, transport to lab within 30 minutes
Rejection:Not received at proper temperature or within specimen time frame.
Normal:No acid fast organisms seen on smear, No acid fast growth at 6 weeks
Uses:Identify microorganisms that may cause infection.
Limitations:Antibiotic therapy may inhibit growth A negative culture does not necessarily rule out infection.
