Specimen:Gastric contents, vomitus
Volume:0.5 mL- 1.0 mL
Container:Clean or sterile urine container
Temperature:Send to lab within 15 minutes.
Rejection:Over 1 hour in transport.
Uses:To determine gastric acidity in persons with stomach pain and burning, ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome; to determine whether the stomach is capable of producing acid as a part of pernicious anemia workup.
Limitations:Stimuli that may increase gastric acid production, including smoking, the sight/odor of food, or stimuli that causes the person to become angry, fearful or depressed.
