OHIO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL SOLUTIONS FOR PATIENT SAFETY (OCHSPS): Over the past five years, the eight Ohio children’s hospitals have worked collaboratively on a number of patient safety issues. The first was to reduce the number of preventable codes that occurred outside the intensive care units. The second was to reduce surgical site infections and the third was to reduce the number of adverse events associated with pain management.
The children’s hospitals are now collaborating on a major initiative to reduce serious harm to children cared for in our facilities. Since January of 2010, we have been identifying and tracking the total number of nine specific events (ventilator-associated pneumonia, pressure ulcers and catheter- associated UTI are just a few examples) that have occurred. The goal of the collaborative is to reduce these nine events by 95 percent by the end of December 2015. To accomplish this goal, we are now providing “error prevention” training to all of our staff, as well as additional leadership training to our senior staff and all of our medical directors. This training includes several very specific behaviors and techniques that we plan to implement as part of the error-reduction strategy.
Our medical directors will complete their 4.5 hours of training by the end of February. At some point in the spring, we will offer the same training to any professional staff member who is interested in the training. Details will follow in future months. This effort is being led by James Ebert, MD, and Hila Collins, CNP.
RECRUITMENT ACTIVITIES: Recruitment continues in a number of specific areas. Joining us in January will be Del Tom Kirkpatrick, MD (medical director of anesthesia services) and Jayaprakash Gosalakkal, MD (medical director of neurology). A number of other positions have also been filled, including endocrinology, neonatology, anesthesia services and pulmonology. These providers will start in the next few months. We have a commitment from a gastroenterologist for the summer of 2013, once he finishes his fellowship. Recruitment continues to be a major initiative with our goal of increasing access in several clinics.
