SAVE THE DATE: Please mark your schedules now.  On November 10, 2010, at 6:00 pm, Catherine Ballard will be joining us at a combined professional staff meeting to be held at NCR Country Club.  Catherine is an attorney with the law firm of Bricker and Eckler, LLP.  The topic will be the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA).  As you recall, EMTALA addresses many of the hospital and physician obligations as they relate to the evaluation, management and disposition of patients who present with emergency medical conditions (EMC).  You might be surprised to know what diagnoses the government might define as an EMC.  If your patients are seen in the ED, if you are a consulting specialist to the ED, if you work on our campus, then EMTALA can affect what you do.  Please plan on joining us that evening.  Invitations will follow.  Contact John Jacher at 937-641-3000 extension 8670.
RECRUITMENT ACTIVITIES: While the construction on I-75 is never ending, so go our recruitment efforts.  In the past few months, we have added an anesthesiologist and two CRNAs, an endocrinologist, pulmonologist, ED physician and  neurologist (for 2011).  We are actively recruiting (and in some cases interviewing candidates) for several other positions including a neurosurgeon, pediatric surgeon, medical director of neurology and of anesthesia, an inpatient generalist, intensivist and urgent care center physicians.  Our most recent addition to the list is for Children’s Health Clinic.  We are recruiting for a pediatrician to join our staff.  The candidate must be board eligible (certified within five years of completing training), possess an Ohio license, be available to cover six half-day clinics a week, teach residents and students, and be comfortable caring for complex/chronic patients.  If you know of someone who might be interested, please contact Cyndy Emerson at 937-641-5307.
Professional Staff Update and Activities: Effective July 1, 2010, Elizabeth Ey, MD, assumed the position of chair-elect of the professional staff, Amit Vohra, MD, is the new chair of medicine and  James Doebele, MD, is the new chair of surgery.  Jeff Adam, MD, has completed his six years of service as chair of the professional staff and board member.  Sherman Alter, MD, and Jennifer Grass, MD, have completed their terms as chair of medicine and surgery.  Please congratulate and thank these individuals when you see them.
After five years of debate and multiple revisions to the recommendations, The Joint Commission recently released a completely revised standard aimed at facilitating the collaboration that should exist between the board of trustees, hospital staff including the president and CEO, and the organized medical staff.  We have until March 2011 to implement the changes.  You can expect that during the next few months you will see frequent reference to these new standards and their implementation.  If you want more information, please contact Tom Murphy, MD, at 937-641-5871.
Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME):  In late June, the ACGME released the latest recommendations aimed at defining the rules and regulations for resident education in ACGME programs.  If implemented as written, these are likely to have significant effects upon working conditions for residents, as well as for the hospitals that employ the residents and the attending physicians who not only educate the residents but depend upon them for care for their patients.  Stay tuned for more details.  These new rules are likely to impact both community-based as well as hospital-based physicians.  For a summary, see the NEJM article published on July 10, 2010.  Questions? Call Tom Murphy, MD, at 937-641-5871.
Migraine Headache Research Study: Dayton Children’s is conducting a clinical research study for children and adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 with recurrent moderate to severe migraines. Daniel Lacey, MD, is the principal investigator. Enrolled patients will receive investigational study medication and study related assessments at no charge. Compensation for time and travel will be provided to participants. Please be assured that any patients you refer for study participation will remain under your care for conditions other than recurrent migraines. After completion of the study, your patients will return to your full care and their case notes from the study can be shared with you with parental permission.  Please contact Linda Uhl at 937-641-4467 or uhll@childrensdayton.orgwith any questions or have your patient call Linda Uhl for more information.
