QUESTION: I NEED TO OBTAIN AN ULTRASOUND TO RULE OUT PYLORIC STENOSIS
AFTER HOURS. WHAT SHOULD I DO? Primary care providers are encouraged to
call and discuss an urgent imaging need directly with one of the
radiologists at Dayton Children’s. We can help coordinate the time and
location of the imaging. Our staff can help with determining whether
preauthorization is needed. A radiologist is available in the hospital
Monday through Friday from 6:30 am to 11:00 pm and on Saturday from 6:30
am to 3:30 pm. After hours, the on-call radiologist is available by
phone. Questions? Call Elizabeth Ey, MD, at 937-641-3393.
VOLUMETRIC QUANTITATIVE CT (QCT) BONE DENSITOMETRY DETERMINATION:
Volumetric quantitative CT bone densitometry determination is now
available at the main campus of Dayton Children’s. This is a rapid and
precise method for determining bone density in children. A short helical
CT is performed through the L1 and L2 vertebral bodies. A volume of data
in each vertebral body is evaluated for bone mineral density and is
reported in mg/cc. The result is then compared to age and gender matched
control data. A Z score is also reported indicating how many standard
deviations the patient’s results are above or below the mean for the
control data. The study takes less than 20 minutes and requires no
patient preparation. The radiation dose is small and the results are more
accurate than DEXA because using the volumetric data requires no
assumptions on patient size. The study can be scheduled as “QCT bone
density study” through central scheduling at 937-641-4000 or call
Elizabeth Ey, MD, at 937-641-3393 with questions.
EPIC TRAINING BEGINS: On August 25, 2009 we plan to “Go Live” with EPIC
on all of our inpatient units, intensive care units, Almost Home Unit and
emergency department. This includes all staff documentation including
H&Ps, progress notes, consults and orders. This applies to all staff
including physicians, dentists, psychologists, allied health staff,
nurses, respiratory therapists, dieticians, etc. To be ready for August
25, all professional staff members who provide ongoing care to inpatients
or to Almost Home Unit patients must be trained and certified to obtain
the passwords necessary to access and use EPIC. We have designed five
specific training modules that will reflect your needs. This could range
from no additional training for a pediatrician who now routinely admits
their inpatients to our inpatient generalist service to eight hours of
training for the PICU physicians, NICU physicians, inpatient generalists,
etc. By the middle of this week (July 22, 2009) you should have received
a letter from me, if you have privileges at Dayton Children’s as a
physician, dentist, psychologist, APN, CRNA, or PA. This letter describes
your options and provides a training schedule. If you have any questions,
please Thomas Murphy, MD, at 937-641-5871.
