Clinical Trials

Since its inception in 2003, Dayton Children’s Clinical Trials has managed several pharmaceutical studies in an effort to improve pediatric dosing instructions on medications taken by children. Most medications currently available are labeled with inadequate instructions for child-sized doses. In many cases, dosing instructions are created with only adults in mind. Drugs may work differently in children than in adults, and as a result, pharmaceutical trials are necessary to help protect children from ineffective or harmful dosing.

Dayton Children's is currently conducting clinical research trials with physicians in pulmonary, infectious disease and some community practices and is recruiting subjects for participation in several of these trials. Some trials include, but are not limited to:

Cystic Fibrosis Studies

Tiger-2 Study is now seeking volunteers with mild CF lung disease age 5 and older.This study is evaluating the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication for mild CF lung disease. This is a Phase 3 double-blinded study. (A list of "terms to know" is located in the frequently asked questions section of clinical trials).

Summary of the Tiger-2 Study:

Volunteers may not need to change their current medication regimen to participate.
The investigational medication is inhaled using a nebulizer, three times per day.
The investigational medication may help improve moisture and mobility of mucus.
The study lasts for about six months.
During the 24-week treatment period, half of the patients receive placebo and the other half of patients receive investigational medication.
Study participation includes as many as seven office visits.
Procedures include lung function text, chest x-ray, blood and urine tests, physical exams, and questionnaires.
Volunteers must be age 5 or older, with mild CF lung disease (measured by a lung function test).

Several other studies are available to see how cystic fibrosis affects daily activities and how much benefit can be received from treatment.
