Topic: Infant Health Care

This handout was written to answer some of the questions you may have about your baby’s special formula.  Please feel free to ask your baby’s dietitian, doctor or nurse practitioner to go over any information you do not understand.

WHY DOES MY BABY NEED A SPECIAL FORMULA?

Many things may cause your baby to have some problems digesting standard formulas.  These things may include premature birth, a difficult delivery, surgery, diarrhea or intolerance of standard formula.  If your baby is not able to digest a standard formula, your baby’s doctor or dietitian may recommend a special formula.

WHAT IS A SPECIAL FORMULA?
A special formula (Alimentum®, Nutramigen® or Pregestimil®) contains all the protein, sugar, fat, vitamins and minerals your baby needs.  These nutrients are in their simplest forms.  They are easily digested.

WILL MY BABY NEED A SPECIAL FORMULA WHEN HE OR SHE COMES HOME?
Most of the things that caused your baby to have problems digesting standard formula may be gone when he or she is ready to go home.  If your baby continues to need a special formula at home, these formulas are generally available through your local grocery or pharmacy.  They are also available through the W.I.C. Program for those who qualify by their income.

My baby’s formula is ___________________________________________.
