The speech/language pathology department at The Children's Medical Center of Dayton specializes in evaluating and treating problems such as articulation, oral motor, voice, fluency and language disorders. Therapists use standard and nonstandard testing to determine the level of function and determine if therapy is indicated. Therapy sessions are typically 30 minutes in length, one session per week. Speech/language pathologists hold master's degrees and are licensed by the State of Ohio. They have specialized training in pediatrics and attend continuing education classes regularly.

- Modified barium swallow studies - A speech/language pathologist works with the radiologist to evaluate oral and pharyngeal structure and function for swallowing. Suggestions for alterations in positioning, food presentation or diet are given to the physician after the study. The speech/language pathologist performing this study undergoes extensive training and yearly competency checks. Referral: A prescription from the physician is required. The order should state "modified barium swallow with speech/language pathology present."

Fast Forward For children ages four to 13 years with language-based reading, language and auditory processing disorders. Pre- and post-testing with a speech pathologist is required. Referral: Prescription from physician for assessment and speech therapy.
Sounds of Reading This program is for children six to 12 years with deficits in the ability to rhyme, segment, blend and manipulate sounds which lay the foundation for reading. These children will likely have difficulty with letter-sound correspondence in reading and spelling. Referral: Physician referral for phonological awareness testing by a speech pathologist.
Alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) This program is for children who are unable to effectively communicate their needs, thoughts or feelings through speech due to cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, mental impairment or neurological dysfunction. Referral: Prescription for a speech language pathologist, which states the need for alternative/augmentative communication.
