Lipid disorders include:
- High cholesterol
- High triglycerides
- Insulin resistance syndrome (this is a prediabetic condition involving high triglycerides, high blood pressure, obesity, high fasting insulin level)
- Comorbidities of obesity
A referral from the primary care physician is required for patients to be seen in the lipid clinic. The lipid clinic at Dayton Children's provides a the following services:
- Medical nutrition therapies
- Exercise prescription
- Lifestyle changes
- Individual medical assessment of risk factors and comorbidities of being overweight
The goal of the therapy is modification of risk factors. Under certain conditions, an inpatient program is available.
What happens at the visit?
The physician provides a full physical evaluation, reviews all preordered laboratories and offers medical nutrition analysis. The lipid clinic team provides assessment, further testing and initiates a treatment plan.
What other tests?
After evaluation, tests for exercise tolerance, sleep apnea, cardiac function (echocardiogram), and oral glucose tolerance may be ordered.
Why all these tests?
These test will allow us to design the best treatment option for your child.
What are the treatments offered at the lipid clinic?
We offer specially designed dietary plans for each child. A full exercise prescription is also provided based on the child's ability and/or medical condition. Other treatments, such as medication, an inpatient program or surgery are discussed on an individual basis. The lipid clinic team includes:
- Pediatritians with additional training in management of lipid disorders and obesity.
- Nurses, Dietitians, medical assistants and office staff specially trained in treatment of patients and families with obesity related concerns.
