Easing your child's pain

At Dayton Children’s we work hard to make a child’s procedures as pain-free as possible. One way we have done this is by developing and using distraction kits for those times when a child is anxious. A distraction kit contains bubble wands, blow toys, pinwheels and other safe toys to distract children from uncomfortable procedures or to ease their fears and anxiety. Distraction is a form of play therapy. Our child life staff was instrumental in developing these kits and training staff in using them with children.

Distraction kits are just one tool used at Dayton Children’s to make sure a child’s experience is as pain-free as possible. Dayton Children’s Pain Busters program was developed by a multidisciplinary team that studied best practices in pain management then adapted those practices for use at Dayton Children’s. We believe it is every child’s right to get relief from any pain during procedures.

Other ways we help parents and children deal with pain are preparation, coaching and using positions of comfort, which help a child feel more in control when undergoing a procedure. Because every child is
different, we work with the parents and the child to find the best way to relieve a child’s pain.

Ask our experts

After the article on internet safety appeared in the last issue of Growing Together, parents asked us how they can protect their children online. Here are some resources recommended by Dayton Children’s Family Resource Center:

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends free filtering software called Windows Live OneCare Family Safety. To learn more, go to www.onecare.live.com/familysafety. Click on the AAP link above to view several articles about internet safety. The AAP also recommends the NetSmartz Workshop from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

Consumer Reports offers information about internet safety. Go to www.consumerreports.org and search for
articles on filtering software and internet safety. You may also ask your internet service provider about parental controls and filtering software, or go to your local electronics or computer store to compare options and cost of filtering software for your specific computer.

Dayton Children's -
Just right for the community

What if you had to drive 50 or more miles for your child’s care? Dayton, Ohio is very fortunate to have a children’s hospital close to home for thousands of children. It may surprise you to know that
“Dayton Children’s is one of only 50 freestanding children’s hospitals in the country.”

There are some states that do not have even one freestanding children’s hospital, and in many states, parents travel long distances to get their children the care they need. It is Dayton Children’s mission to continue offering top pediatric specialists and ensuring a full range of pediatric services is quickly and easily available to every child needing them.
