Question My 2-1/2-year-old grandson is developmentally normal in every way except his speech. He says an occasional "ma ma," jabbers while playing, but makes no other sounds. He shakes his head yes or no when asked a question. He has a 5-year-old brother who is very verbal. He is a happy delightful child----relates well with others. He has had a normal hearing test. He pats you on the leg to get your attention, he waves, but does not say anything. Any cause for concern yet? |

Answer It does sound like he is delayed in his speech and language skills and would benefit from a speech/language evaluation and possible speech therapy. Most 2-year-old children have a large vocabulary of words and are putting words together to formulate two word phrases. It is best to have this checked out now as you have several years to work with him and improve his speech and language skills before he starts school. I recommend you discuss this with the family doctor and ask for a referral for a speech/language evaluation. You can also contact your county early intervention/Help Me Grow program as they offer free services that do not require a physician order (the Ohio number is 1-800-755-4769 - they can connect you with your county office). |
