Uses: Rate of sedimentation of erythrocytes is an indirect means of quantitating rouleaux formation, plasma concentrations of fibrinogen, immunoglobulins and acute phase reaction proteins, and the shape of the red blood cells all effect the ESR.
Limitations: Hemolysis may modify sedimentation, anemia, polycythemia, hemoglobinopathy, and paraproteinemia invalidate the results.
